READ

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith (Philippians 3:8-9).

We are a culture of collectors. We want more things, bigger things, and better things.  There is nothing wrong with having “things.” Problems arise when we allow things to have us. The things of the world are God’s gifts to serve us in this life. But, when it comes to life eternal, our earthly “things” have no power. We are called to worship the Creator and not the things He created. The “things” Christ has won for us are faith and forgiveness, life and salvation. These are the lasting blessings of God for this life and for life in heaven. Everything else is “rubbish.”

REFLECT

What “things” are getting in the way of your relationship with the Triune God?

RESPOND

Prayer:  O Holy Spirit, increase my faith that I may never allow the things of the world to become more important to me than the things of God.  Grant this in the name of Jesus, My Lord and Savior.  Amen.
