READ

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).

What is “mercy?” Mercy is simply defined as “not getting what we deserve.” What is it that we truly deserve, but don’t receive? Because of sin we deserve to be distanced from God. In other words, we deserve hell. The mercy of God is shown in the fact that Jesus took upon Himself what we deserve. It was on the cross that Jesus suffered the separation from the heavenly Father that was rightly ours. Jesus literally experienced hell on the cross on our behalf. This is the mercy of the Lord.

REFLECT

How has God’s mercy impacted Your relationship with Him and with those in your circle of influence?

RESPOND

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your mercy in my life as You took upon Yourself my sin and my punishment. As You suffered in my place I give You my thanks and praise. In Your name I live and pray.  Amen.
