And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
(Luke 23:34)
This is the pinnacle of loving one’s enemies. The innocent Son of God is rejected by His Church, sentenced to death by its leaders, and crucified for the sins of the entire human race. To make matters worse, they make fun of Him as He suffers. How would He address this cast of sinners? As He opens His mouth to speak, the crowd becomes quiet. Will He recant His teachings and beg for mercy? Would He curse the whole lot of them? No, He speaks of forgiveness. He knows why He is crucified. He knows He bears the sins of the world. He knows these people need saving. He knows He is the only One to save them and this is the only way to accomplish salvation. His love covers the multitude of sins.
REFLECT
How would you react to the forgiving words of Jesus if you stood under the cross that Good Friday?
RESPOND
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank and praise You for the gift of forgiveness. Thank You for taking my place on the cross. Thank You for opening heaven’s door to me. Thank You for turning me from being Your enemy to Your friend. I ask this in Y0ur name, Lord Jesus. Amen.
