READ

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away (I Corinthians 13:4-8).

I dare say that the majority of Christian weddings include today’s passage. Here Paul gives us a thorough definition of “love.” When one examines this definition it is easy to see that Jesus embodies this description of “love,” and yet, we are called to fulfill it as well. Perhaps Paul articulates these elements of love so we would take time to carefully examine them and determine how we fare in the world of Christian love. Nobody is perfect, but we all can aspire to embrace these Christian elements of love.

REFLECT

Which of the elements of love do you struggle with in your relationships?

RESPOND

Prayer: Gracious Lord, I thank You for Your perfect love in my life. Give me the wisdom, the faith, and the strength to live out these elements of love in my life and my relationships. I ask this in Your Name. Amen.
