READ

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (I John 2:1).

It is our intent to live lives that reflect the commands of God. What gets in the way is sin. Paul put it this way, “For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me” (Romans 7:18-20). We can relate. We try and try, and then we fail and fall. Not only can we count on our failures, but we certainly can count on God’s forgiveness. This demonstrates the depth of God’s love for us. It is a love that forgives us, renews us, and puts us back on the path of righteousness.

REFLECT

What sin in your life causes you grief and guilt? Have you taken it to Jesus for forgiveness and new life?

RESPOND

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your forgiving love in my life. Give me Your Holy Spirit that I may respond to Your forgiveness by walking in Your commands. I pray in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
