READ

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you (Proverbs 25:21-22).

Many read this verse and take it to mean the only reason you would do good to your enemy is to shame them, make them feel bad, and show yourself to be the bigger person. Let’s look at this verse in a different way. Perhaps the Lord is telling us to do good to our enemies out of love and care for them with the intent that they would be ashamed of their behavior and be moved to do good. Our desire is not to show them up or beat them up. We want to lift them up to a healthier manner of working out our differences.

REFLECT

Who is an enemy that needs your loving actions?

RESPOND

Prayer: Dearest Father in heaven, give me a heart that seeks to help those who oppose me. Give me the mind of Jesus, who desires that we live in peace with each other. I pray this through Your Son, Jesus.  Amen.
