When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with (Proverbs 16:7).
When we are troubled by the insensitive words or the harmful actions of others, we have many options as how to respond. We can ignore them, which may cause our silent anger to grow and affect our lives. We can respond with rage and believe we have the right to strike back. We can forgive, but never forget (which really isn’t forgiving at all). Or we can simply listen to the Lord. Over the past 5 weeks we have concerned ourselves with the topic of love. We have come to find out that our definition of love isn’t the same as the Lord. Our definition of love usually centers on ourselves. God moves us to consider His definition of love, which moves us from ourselves to others. Gayle Sayers, the great running back for the Chicago Bears, wrote his autobiography under the title “I Am Third.” God is first, others are second, and I am third. Others have put it this way: “JOY = Jesus first, Others second, Yourself third.” This is God’s way. May it be our way too.
REFLECT
Are you third?
RESPOND
Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I thank and praise You for the message of Your love in my life. Bless me with such a faith that I would love You with all my heart, soul, and mind, and love others just as You love them. I pray in Your powerful and loving name. Amen.
