READ

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:36-38).

When we read this section of Scripture we often miss one of the most important points Jesus conveys to us. We are called into His service. The Lord is the One who established His Church. He is the One who died for His Church. Now He calls us to be compassionate and invite the harassed, the helpless, and the hurting to join us in the Church. The harvest is plentiful. There are so many who are seeking a better life, a healthier life, a meaningful life. We know where to lead them—to the Lord’s Church.

REFLECT

How has the Church shown compassion to you?

RESPOND

Prayer: Bless Your Church, O Lord, that we may be compassionate to those who look for a life only You can offer. In Your precious and powerful name I pray.  Amen.
