The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him (Romans 8:16-17).
Why does Paul say we are to “suffer” with Christ? Didn’t Jesus take upon Himself all the suffering needed for our salvation? The suffering Paul speaks of is not for our salvation, but because of our salvation. When Jesus walked the earth He reminded His disciples that following Him would bring criticism, and at times violence, from the unbelieving world. The suffering Christians experience in this world is not a sign of God’s abandonment, but a mark of genuine discipleship. The stand we take as Christians in this culture can often attract criticism. We can be called names, be ostracized, and even attacked. But, recognize that the suffering we experience now cannot compare to the glory we will experience in heaven (Romans 8:18).
REFLECT
Have you experienced any type of criticism for being a Christian?
RESPOND
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You experienced suffering because of the life-giving message You came to preach and share. Give me strength in those times that I am criticized for following You. Help me to respond with peace and patience that I may be a positive witness. I pray this in Your precious and powerful name, and to Your glory. Amen.
