For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee (II Corinthians 5:1-5).
St. Paul understood how challenging life can be. He was beaten, shipwrecked, snake bit, and imprisoned. We may not experience these traumas, but we do encounter our own set of challenges. It is a tough life. Paul reminds us that a better life is coming. He compares this life to a tent and heaven to a wonderful dwelling. Tents are temporary. Buildings are permanent. This world is the tent. Heaven is the eternal dwelling. The pains of this world will never be experienced in heaven. The joys of this world will never compare to the joys of heaven.
REFLECT
How do you envision heaven?
RESPOND
Prayer: Dearest Father in heaven, protect me in this challenging world and call me to the eternal joys of heaven, which is mine through Your Son, Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
